My family always tease me – why does everything you say sound like a story. I suppose it is because I think our life is a succession of stories linked together in a way that delineates the path we take…
so here is the story of Blue Lotus Gems
As a practicing homeopath and flower essence practitioner, gemstones and crystals have been an important part of my work for many years. I use them as remedies, as essences, for protection, meditation and I love to wear them as jewellery.
Travels to India have been laced with visits to Jaipur where I have bought some wonderful stones which I then had set into rings by a small independent jeweller in Goa.
This story started with the purchasing of a large, boldly faceted, rich red ruby. Glorious in colour and shape, and almost the size of a two pence piece. I designed the setting and left it to be made up into a simple ring. The last evening before returning home to London I took a rickshaw to collect the finished piece and was greeted with “there has been a bit of an accident”. The setter had broken the ruby. I was deeply upset and unusually, really cross. I shouted at the jeweller, stomped out of the cool air-conditioned shop into the dark heat and chaos of the street, and stood there steaming with fury and disappointment. It was then that I heard a clear voice in my head say “Stop shouting and blaming others. DO IT YOURSELF”.
This kept repeating like a mantra in my mind all that night and throughout the long drawn out journey back to London. I was traveling on my own, which gave me the time and space to reflect on the message. On arrival in London, I googled “jewellery making courses”, enrolled the next day and started to learn the incredibly challenging art of goldsmithing.
I now am fortunate enough to have set up two tiny workspaces in London and Goa, and I spend every possible minute, when I am not treating patients, making individual pieces of wearable jewellery. These are usually inspired by a particular semi precious stone. Each piece is unique and made entirely by me from start to finish (with the exception of a few hand cast parts and the gold plating).
I believe there is great beauty in imperfection.
We are increasingly surrounded by flawless machine-made objects. I wish to celebrate the hand made; every stone has a charm in its irregularity and some of the metal work may not be quite straight or polished to perfection. To my eye, these flaws show the patina, the crafted marks which tell of my enjoyment, and sometimes my frustration, in creating and assembling every piece.
Each crystal or gemstone has been purposely chosen as imparting a particular vibration, allowing the wearer to benefit from its unique properties.
If this resonates, then welcome to Blue Lotus Gems.
When selecting your piece, my advice is to follow your instinct and your heart. A stone chooses you, so if you are naturally drawn to a particular colour or shape, then it is probably because you would benefit from its properties.
Wear it in the knowledge that it can help you to feel balanced and protected.
